Super Bowl Sunday was a cold and blustery morning on the frozen tundra at...actually it ended up to e quite a nice day to be out detecting in Lents Park. Some very nice finds were made by many people starting out with Jack Hipp's 14k wedding band with nuggets and his 1937 Mercury dime. The oldest coin of the day was a 1908-S Barber dime found by Dick Gaboury. Don Rasey, Ed Slater, Mike Maxon, Robert Zbinden and Todd Mullican each found nice sterling rings. New member Mike Maxon also found a nice 1915 Canadian large cent. Clarence Sparks found a nice Buffalo nickel. The total number of wheaties found by members on the hunt was 41. Bob Kosto won a Morgan Dollar in the membership drawing. Robert found the yellow nickel planted by Dick Gaboury and Duane Flackus dug up the most garbage, each received a Walker Half-dollar from Dick. Also Dick wrote down a cash amount before the hunt and the member closest to the number received a Walker Half-dollar. Sue Maxson recovered $1.36 and the number was $1.37, way to go Sue. Thanks to Dick for donating the 3 halves as prizes.

The 25 members who came out for the outing at McKenna Park were all treated to a brief appearance by the sun during their detecting time. Several people were lucky enough to find some sterling during the hunt. Jack Hipp and Jim Ward each found a sterling earring and Mike Young and Bob Kosto each found a sterling ring. Don Spillman was the lucky one for silver coins with 1957 and 1960-D quarters. Jim Siel also found a silver quarter, 1943-D. Mike Maloney found a 1947 Dime. The membership drawing for a Morgan dollar went to Ron Rathbun. Dick Gaboury gave away 2 Walker half-dollars. The most trash half went to Don Spillman with over 120 pieces of trash dug up. The second half went to the person who dug up the most pennies which was Ed Slater with 66.

The 29 club members who came out for the March outing were treated to a perfect day of sun at US Grant Park and High School. The competition was tight at this hunt with only 13 points separating the top four finishers. Robert Zbinden and Dick Gaboury found the only two sterling Rings this day. Several silver dimes were found by members during the day: Mike Nanson with a 1947-S and a 1957-D Roosevelt dime, Dick Gaboury with a 1940-S Mercury dime, Bill Baker with a 1946-S and a1952-D Roosevelt dime, Mike young with a 1928-S and a 1943-D Mercury Dime and Brad Weigandt with a 1914-S Barber Dime. Mike and Dick each also found Buffalo nickels. There were also 38 wheaties found by members during the hunt. Dick Gaboury gave away two Walking Liberty half-dollars for to the person closest to a dollar amount in change found that he wrote down at the beginning of the hunt. The Mary and Clarence Sparks took them both home when Mary with $0.90 was closest to the number of $0.98 and Clarence was a penny off with $2.36 and the number was $2.37. Steve Tucker won the membership attendance drawing for a nice looking 1883 Morgan dollar.

Another beautiful Oregon spring morning was spent out finding the lost stuff new and old. We had 23 members come out to Creston Park to detect. I apologize for the short notice on the change of venue from Mt. Hood, but mother nature just did not cooperate this year. Some excellent finds were made by members on the outing, starting with Bill Baker finding a 1923-S Peace Dollar. He also found a 1964 Dime. Steve Tucker found a nice Plum 10K ring. Arnie Mauroni came up with a 1910-D Barber Quarter and a 1944-D dime. Dick Gaboury, George Parker, Mike Young and Robert Zbinden all found sterling jewelry. Mike Nanson found 1942-S and 1951-S dimes. Mike Young found a 1937-D dime and Dick Gaboury had a1906 Barber Dime and a 1941-S dime. All in all a lot of good stuff came out of Creston Park. Dick Gaboury gave away two Walking Liberty half-dollars. The first to the person who found the amount closest to $3.75 which was Robert Zbinden with $3.83. The second went to the person closest to 49 points for the hunt and Don Lieurance got the number at 49. Arnie Mauroni won the membership attendance drawing for a Morgan dollar.

Eighteen club members came out on a cloudy Oregon morning to hunt a couple of Portland parks. Members had a choice of Dawson and/or Lillis-Albina Parks. The rain held of until after we counted out and a good time was had by all. Steve Tucker again found a gold ring at the club outing. This one was a 10K 1973 Washington HS ladies class ring, that's two in a row Steve. Other good finds were made by Jack Hipp, who found a 10K ring and a very interesting Mexican sterling head with tigers eye. He also found a 1906-D Barber dime, a 1924 Mercury dime and a 1944-S war nickel. Bill Baker had a sterling ring, Mike Nanson got a 1935-S dime, Tim Towsley got a 1952-D quarter, Clarence Sparks got two war nickels: 1945-D & 1945-S and I found an 1890 Indian head cent and a 1941-D dime. This month William Parks donated a Silver Eagle to the person who came closet to $0.52 in change found during the outing. Mike Maloney was closet with $0.60. Mike also won the membership drawing for a nice 1890 silver dollar. Congratulations Mike! The June outing was at Shute Park in Hillsboro. It was a gorgeous morning to be out detecting and a few nice finds were made. Jack Hipp found a nice 1954-D Franklin Half-Dollar and a sterling religious medallion. Mike Young, Bill Baker, and Todd Mullican each found a Mercury dime and Jim Cornwell found a silver Roosevelt dime. Mike Maxon found a nice 1937 Washington Quarter and Tim Towsley found a 1916-S Buffalo nickel. I found two Indian Head pennies, 1900 and 1902. In addition to the top 5 in points getting Washington Quarters, a Walking Liberty Half-Dollar, 1859 Seated Liberty Half-Dime, and 2 Standing Liberty Quarters were given to the four finishers with the least points. Those that were not at either end of the standings, received Mercury dimes. Bill Baker won the Silver dollar for the membership attendance drawing.

The July outing was at Council Crest Park, the highest point in the Portland city limits. Once the fog burned off, it was a perfect morning for twenty club members to be out looking for good finds. The total amount of change found in our four hours of detecting was $41.50. There were also 5 silver rings found by Clarence Sparks, Janice Nicholson, Arnie Mauroni, Mike Young and Brad Weigandt. George Parker found a 1944-S dime and I found a 1951 quarter and three dimes, 1946, 1947-S and 1954-S. I gave some prizes for closest to 73 points and closest to $1.47 found. Don Lieurance took home a Barber half-dollar by getting 69 points and Ron Rathbun took home a Seated Liberty half-dime with $1.30 found. We also drew a number for a Standing Liberty quarter which Ron Rathbun also won. The membership drawing silver dollar went to Jim Siel.

The August outing was at Laurelhurst Park and it was another beautiful morning to be out detecting. Laurelhurst Park has been hunted a lot over the years but some good stuff was still found. Mike Nanson found a 1911 V and 1936 Buffalo nickels, and a 1925-S Mercury dime. Chris Beniston found a really nice 14K gold ring and two Mercury dimes. Don Spillman found a Mercury and a Roosevelt silver dime and a silver Washington Quarter. Don Racey found a silver Roosevelt dime and Karen Pelletier found a very interesting sterling turtle ring. Mike Maxon had the coin of the day, an 1890 Seated Liberty dime, his first. Bill Parks donated a a very nice 2004 silver bullion dollar to the person who came closest to $1.71 in change and Karen Pelletier won it with $1.73. Dick Gaboury donated 5 Barber dimes for the 5 people with the least points. The membership attendance silver dollar drawing went to Don Racey.

The September outing was at Clinton Park and Franklin High School. Twenty-five members showed up for the hunt and plenty of good stuff was found. Doyle Thibert found a 14K ring and a sterling ring. Don Lieurance, Bob Kosto, Mary Sparks and Todd Mullican each found sterling rings. Sandie Peters also found a sterling ring which was her first ever. Todd also found a sterling Italian bracelet and a sterling pendant. A total of 9 silver dimes were found during the hunt. They were found by Dick Gaboury, Tom Smith, Mike Young, Bill Baker and Todd. Dick Gaboury donated three half-dollars to give away. The first with to Tom Smith who was closest to $4.73 with $4.36 and the second went to Bev Parker who was closest to $0.51 with $0.31. The third went to Doyle with the most trash picked up with 80 pieces.

We had a fun time at the last club hunt, which was at Brentwood Park and Lane school in SE Portland. To our dismay, our leader Tom Smith was in the hospital with appendicitis so Dick and I took over the duties. It was a wet day but we found some neat stuff. Todd Mullican found 2 nice silver rings and a rosey. Dick Gaboury got a merc, Mike Young got 2 mercs, Jack Hipp found 2 mercs and a war nickel. Bob Kosto found a gold ring. Doyle Thibert found a gold chain with a pendant. Bill Park found a silver ring, I found a walking half and a rosey. There were lots of wheaties found and quite a bit of change, etc. Dick Gaboury donated 2 walking halves for the closest mystery $ amount and 4 barber dimes to the 4 lowest point scores. Membership drawing winner was Jim Siel; M&M jar guesses were won by Jim Cornwell guessed 473 and Monte Berry guessed 437. There were 462 M&M's in the jar.

The November outing was at Fernhill Park in Portland. There were 26 members who counted out and 28 altogether came out to find some treasure. The treasure this month was found by Mike Maxon. He scored with an 1879 2 1/2 dollar gold coin in a gold bezel. Great find Mike!!! Other good finds wre sterling rings found by Todd Mullican, Dick Gaboury, Robert Zbinden, and Jack Hipp. Steve Tucker found a sterling earring. Only one silver coin was found a 1943-D Mercury dime by Tom Smith. Dick gave away two half-dollars to the detectorist closest to 59 or 121 points. They went to Clarence Sparks (54 points) and Mike Nanson (122 points). The membership attendance drawing went to Jim Cornwall who received a very nice silver dollar.

The December outing was at Willamette Park. It was a very beautiful winter day with clear skies and lots of sunshine. The good finds were a bit sparse, but Jerry Harris managed to find a sterling earring, a 1957-D Quarter and an 1892-S Barber Dime. Todd Mullican found a 1950-D dime and William Park found part of a silver earring. Only 5 wheaties were found but 8 canadian pennies were found which is way more than usual. Dick Gaboury donated 5 Barber Dimes to give away to the 5 people with the lowest points for the day. William Park donated a nice Morgan Dollar to give to the person who got closest to $1.84 found and that went to Carl Middlebrook who had $1.83. The Membership Participation Dollar went to Ron Rathbun.
