2009 Club Hunts


January


Our January club outing was at Clinton park and Franklin High School. Twenty of us survived the cold and there were some pretty good finds. Dick Gaboury got a '42 Merc and a '64 Rosie, Jim Seil got a '53 Rosie, James Lyon found a '47 and '57 Rosie in the same hole and also a gold ring. Bill Baker found a '54 Washington quarter and a '43 war nickel. There was a lot of clad $ too!

The top hunters for the day were:

4th Richard Shellhammer 120 pts
5th Dan Killian 103 pts

Membership drawing winner was Russel Gray who took home a barber half dollar.

Fun Hunt:

The Fun Hunt, put on by our President Brian Lundquist, was originally scheduled for December but was cancelled due to crazy amounts of snow. The hunt was rescheduled and the weather for us at Glenhaven park was much better. There were Buffalo Nickels and wheeties planted all over the field, many of which could be found without a metal detector. There were also silver coins and club tokens, not all of which were found. A big thank-you to Brian for sponsering this event.


Regular Hunt:

Our February club outing was at Columbia park in North Portland. The forecast was for rain but we missed the majority of it. It was a good time for all who attended. Dick Gaboury donated 3 barber dimes that we gave away. Todd Mullican donated some coins that we game away too. Thanks Dick and Todd. There were some excellent finds too. Dick found a real nice 14k ID bracelet. Todd found a 43s war nickel and an 1890 V nickel. Bill Baker found an 05 Indian head cent. James Lyons got a gold ring, Lloyd Hunt found a 44s war nickel. 11 wheat pennies and 3 silver items were among the other finds.

Hi everybody, nice seeing you again. Our March club hunt was at North Gresham Grade School and park. It was a wet one to say the least. We counted out an hour early because everybody was wet and cold. There were some good finds. Dick Gaboury, Ron Spade and Brian Lundquit each found a silver rosey. Charles Davis found a 23 Mercury dime. Clarence Sparks found a nice ring. Bill baker found a silver ring. Dick donated 2 barber dimes.. one for most pennies which was won by Lloyd Hunt who also had the oldest coin with a 1917 wheat penny The other dime went to Larry Williams who had the oldest foreign coin. Tim Towsley found the most money with $6.35. Silver dimes went to all who found the mystery item. The count out results were:

April


Our April outing was at West Moreland park in SE Portland. The weatherman predicted rain but it was a beautiful day. The hunt started out slow but by count out time it improved. Brian Kinnier found a 14K gold bangle bracelet, a silver ring and a 1902 Indian head penny, which was the oldest coin found that day. Todd White dug a 28 merc dime and a silver Mickey mouse pendant. Dick Gaboury got a silver war nickel and a buffalo nickel. James Lyons found a silver ring, Dan Killian found a gold ring. There were quite a few wheat pennies also found. So all in all...a good hunt. Dick donated 2 barber dimes. Most garbage won by James L. and closest to 53 which Lloyd Hurt won. Ron Spada won the membership drawing for a barber half dollar.

Hi everybody...nice seeing you again. Our May club outing was at Gabriel park in SW Portland. We were greeted with some hot weather. There were some hot finds too. Richard Shellhammer found a nice gold band. Todd White found a gold child's ring. There were a few wheat pennies found. The oldest which was a 1919 found by Victor Sasek. No silver coins were found this time. All in all, everyone had a good time and found something. The results were:

Hi everybody...nice seeing you again. June's club outing was at Kenton park. It was another hot day for detecting. It was especially hot for James Lyons who found a 14kt gold ring with diamonds. There were a few wheat pennies found but no silver coins this time. George Parker found over $7 in change and some other cool point items. Dick donated 2 barber dimes. Lucky winners were Carl Middlebrook and Richard Shellhammer. Club dimes went out to those who found the mystery item. Bill Baker won the barber half in the membership drawing. Hi everybody...nice seeing you again. Our last club hunt was at Parkrose high and middle school. It was another plus 90 degree day. 24 hunters attended. There were some good finds. Lloyd Hurt got a gold band and a silver ring. Mike Maxon found an Apollo moonwalk token. Mike Jeffries found a Seattle transit token. Dick Gaboury found the oldest coin with a 47 wheat. Bill Baker and Brian Lundquist each found a silver ring. Some sad news to report. James Lyons found a gold ring that didn't want to be found. Seems he lost it between his dig spot and our count out area. I haven't heard if anybody went back to try to find it. So, the dirty shovel of the day award went to James. hehehe.

Hi everybody, nice seeing you again. Our August club hunt was at Fernhill park. It was a good one too. There were some very nice finds. Let's start out with silver coins. James Lyons found a rosey and a washington quarter, Dick Gaboury found a merc, Bill Baker found a rosey, George Parker found a merc and Lloyd Hurt got a 29 standing liberty quarter. Next in notable jewelry finds was Larry Williams who found a silver bracelet and Arnie Mauroni found an 18 kt gold ring!!! Bev Parker found her first wheat penny. There were many other good finds by everyone who attended. The results were:

Lucky Arnie Mauroni won the barber half for the membership drawing. He also won a barber dime Dick donated for the most pull tabs dug. The other barber dime went to Bruce Drugg for closest to a specified score. We gave out silver dimes to those who found the mystery item. Thanks to all.

Hello everybody, nice seeing you again. Our September outing was at Centennial high and Lychwood grade and park. It proved to be a good one, in fact if we all pooled the change we found we'd have $61.80. That's almost enough for a bag of groceries!!! or 3.8 oz. of silver!!! or...??? Everybody found something of interest. There were no silver coins found but there were some silver rings and jewelry items. Bill Baker, Lloyd Hurt, Clarence Sparks, Richard Shellhammer, Arnie Mauroni, Dick Armstrong and Russell Gray all got a piece of silver jewelry. There were a few wheat pennies found. Dick Gaboury got 2, Bill got one, Arnie and Bruce Drugg tied for the oldest coin with 1944 wheats. Dick donated 2 barber dimes. One was given to Lloyd for having the most state quarters. The other was won by Krystal Woodruff for being closest to a specified score. The top finishers were:

Hi everybody...nice seeing you again. Our October outing was at Glenwood park and Kelly elementary in SE Portland. It turned out to be a beautiful sunny fall day. It was exceptionally beautiful for James Lyons who found a silver bracelet, a gold pendant and a silver rosey. Dick Gaboury found the oldest coin with a 29 wheat penny. There were quite a few interesting finds over all. I hid 8 club tokens. 4 were found at the hunt and the next day Jim Siel went back and found 2 more. Still 2 left to find out there. Good luck. Hi everybody...nice seeing you again. Our November outing was at Arbor Lodge park in N. Portland. It started out a little slow but turned out to be a good hunt for most who attended. 35+ members attended this hunt making it the biggest yet. There were some good finds too. Dick Gaboury, Justin Lee and Bill Baker found silver rosies. Todd White got a silver war nickel. There were quite a few wheat pennies found the oldest being a 1917 found by Brian Kinnear. Dick found the overall oldest coin with a 1913 french coin. Arnie Mauroni found a gold bracelet!!! Mark Larson got a silver bracelet. James Lyons and Richard Shellhammer got silver jewelry. The countout results were as follows:
