2010 Club Hunts
January
Hi everybody...nice seeing you again. Our January outing was at Irving park in NE Portland. It was a wet, muddy mess out there but it didn't stop us from finding some good finds. There were some silver rings, and some old wheatback pennies, some cool toy items, etc. The illusive silver coins were just that. No gold either. Oh well. Maybe we just didn't walk in the right spot. The top hunters for the day were:
1st place James Lyons 113 pts
2nd place Brian Lundquist 106 pts
3rd place Dick Gaboury 95 pts
4th place Richard Shellhammer 93 pts
5th place Todd White 90 pts
6th place Larry Williams 78 pts.
Memberships drawing winner for the Barber half was Brent Cousins. Congrats to all that hunted.
Our February club hunt will be on Sunday, Feb. 28th. We will be meeting at the McDonald's located at 1831 West Burnside. We will gather around 7AM and leave for the hunt site promptly at 8. Hope to see you all there.
There's been some concern regarding restrooms at our hunt locations. Unfortunately the Portland parks people lock them and turn the water off to prevent frozen pipes and other problems that they foresee. I'm sorry but we have no control over any of that. Maybe that 2nd or 3rd cup of coffee isn't that great of an idea in this situation.

There were 3 silver coins found. Ron Spada got a rosey, Don Spillman got a merc, and Dick Gaboury got a silver Canadian dime. There were some wheat pennies found as well as some silver jewelry items. Hi everybody. Nice seeing you again. Our July club hunt took place in Vancouver at the Hudson bay high and surrounding parks. A record number of members showed up and it turned out to be a real good hunt. First of all, the McDonald's that we were meeting at burned down a few days before our hunt. But since we love a challenge we passed the paperwork thru open windows on the back street. Everybody found their way to the hunt site and everybody found something. Don Lieurance found the oldest coin with a 1891 Indian head penny! George Parker dug a 43 Washington quarter! Tom Severnson got a 41 merc! There were quite a few wheat pennies found. Also some neat artifacts and jewelry were found. We found quite a few old bullets that dated back to the civil war era. We took out almost 10 lbs of trash. Top hunters for the day were:

August
Hi everybody. Nice seeing you again. Our August club hunt took place in SW Portland at Jackson middle school. It was a perfect day to be out enjoying our hobby. The ground was very hard due to lack of rain but we managed to retrieve some good stuff without making a mess. One of our newest members, Lonnie Trickle, got a 62 Benjamin half dollar. It was his first trip outside of his back yard with his detector and he made a great find. Bruce Drugg got a standing liberty quarter. This one didn't have a date as most don't because of the design. Nevertheless, an excellent find. James Lyons is still suffering with his back injury but managed to dig a 64 Washington quarter and a silver ring. There were 7 other silver jewelry items found. There were a few wheat pennies found. No gold this time. We took out over 10 lbs of trash and over $83 in clad coins. There were 27 of us that counted out. The top hunters for the day were:

November
Hi everybody. Nice seeing you again. Our November outing was at Willamette park in West Linn. It was a beautiful day to be out hunting. We've been real lucky this year with the weather. There were 20 of us that counted out. Everybody found something including James Lyons who got a gold ring. Todd White got a silver ring, Richard Shellhammer got a silver earring. There were 8 wheat pennies found. No silver coins this time which was surprising because this was an old park. Maybe it's been hunted in the past? haha. Most public sites have been. We took out over 8 lbs of garbage. The top hunters for the day were:
1st place James Lyons 127 pts
2nd place Mike Maxon 101 pts
3rd place Bill Baker 95 pts

Our December outing will be on Sunday, January 2nd. We will be meeting at the McDonald's on 28th and SE Powell. We'll be arriving around 7AM and leave for the hunt site promptly at 8. Count out will be at noon. Hope to see you all there.
Reminder: This will be Dick and my last hunt. We've been doing this off and on for the past 10 yrs. I think it's time someone stepped up and took this over. I would hate to see nobody interested in doing it and have the club outings not happen anymore. So, volunteer for this or other spots that will be vacant, like FOTM. etc. This club doesn't run itself. We need equal help from all. Have a great healthy Christmas and may God be with you.
Bill Baker and Dick Gaboury
December
Hi everybody...nice seeing you again. Our December outing was held at Creston park in SE Portland. It was about 28 degrees and the east wind was blowing at 20 mph. That equaled to a very cold day. Clarence Sparks and I thought we were going to be the only ones to show up but by the time we left McDonald's there were 8 of us. In spite of the freezing temperatures we were able to chip away at the ground and find a few items of interest. I got a 25 wheatie, Llyod Hurt got a wheatie and a silver ring, Linda Carlson got a 48 nickel. Rod Walton got a wheatie. Everybody found something. The results were as follows:
