2011 Club Hunts

January

Hi, all you dirt diggers! It was really nice to see so many of you at the hunt. Our January club hunt was held at Grant Park and High School in NE Portland. The day was cloudy but no rain. It was a great day for detecting. Richard Shellhammer was the top hunter; he found a gold ring and came in first place. Arnie Mauroni, Lloyd Hurt, James Lyons and Don Arbuckle all found silver rings. Larry Williams found a silver earring. Dick Armstrong and Brian Stafford each found silver pendants. Laura Smith found both a nice 1952 Rosy and a 1942 Merc. Good job, Laura. The attendance winner was Nancy Buffet who won a Kennedy half. Also found were 10 wheaties, 4 pre-1964 nickels and 13 lbs of trash. Only 3 out of the 8 planted tokens were found. So you know what that means: our next hunt will have a total of 13 tokens hidden. WOW!

Here are the results of the top 6 hunters who received silver quarters:

1st place Richard Shellhammer 124 points
2nd Larry Williams 109
3rd James Lyons 104
4th Mark Larson 99
5th Arnie Mauroni 90
6th Brian Stafford 89

March

WOW! I think we hit a record! We had 32 members count out even though it was a rainy day. We went to the old volcano, better known as Mt. Tabor. I was glad to see so many members out enjoying themselves. There is no better way to meet new friends. There were some good finds. Just ask Dick G.: he found a 1907 Barber dime, a 1964 Rosy, a buffalo nickel and he came in at first place. James L, found a 1927 Merc and a 1954 Wheatie. Justin L. found a 1956 Wheatie. Bob S. found two Wheaties, one being a 1951. Dick A. found a 1951 Wheatie also. Arnie M. found a 1928 Canadian penny. Bruce D. found a silver ring; Ron S. found a silver cross. Todd W. found the oldest coin, a 1903 Barber dime. The lucky attendance drawing winner was Paul Lu. Who won a nice silver Walking Liberty half. There were 7 club tokens found and Larry W. found 3 of them. So that means I will be hiding 17 club tokens at the next hunt. Together we found 22 lbs of trash and $36.54 in coins. Now think about this, there were 32 hunters, hunting for 4 hours: that's a total of 128 hours of detecting and old Mt. Tabor did not give up a single gold item. I'm looking forward to the next hunt.

Here are the top 6 hunters who received silver quarters:

1. Dick G. 108 points
2. Larry W. 97
3. James L. 96
4. Bruce D. 95
5. Justin L. 88

It was a cloudy, cool, and perfect day for metal detecting at Harvey Scott School and Wellington Park. There were some nice things found. Victor Sasek found a very nice gold ring. Dick Gaboury found a pretty St. Christopher silver pendant. Arnie Mauroni found a small silver ring. While there were no silver coins found, there were a lot of Wheaties found. Dick Gaboury found two and the following members each found one: Dick Armstrong, Bob Schelb, Brian Lundquist, Brian Stafford, Stuart Pritchard, Arnie Mauroni, Scott Hadley, and Linda Carlson. Lloyd Hurt found the oldest coin, a 1929 Wheatie. Dick Gaboury found a silver dollar size 1909 token with an Indian head on one side and some writing on the other. He said he will bring it to the June meeting all cleaned up. I'm looking forward to learning the history of that one.

The attendance drawing winner was lucky dog Dick Gaboury, who won a nice 1954 Benjamin Franklin half dollar. There were a total of 20 club tokens found out of 25. The finders are: lucky Arnie Mauroni with 6; Bob Schelb with 3;,Scott Hadley, Stuart Pritchard, and Dick Armstrong all found 2 each; Linda Carlson, Brian Lundquist, Dick Gaboury, Harold Cawthon, and Laura Liddell all found one each. For the June outing I will be hiding 13 tokens. Together we found a total of $24.35 and 13.5 lbs of trash.

July

We went to the Meadows Ski Resort on majestic Mt. Hood. What a beautiful day for metal detecting. If you haven't hunted on Mt. Hood, you are missing a great experience. Just the view is worth the trip. There were 18 members that counted out and for some of them, it was their first time metal detecting on a ski resort, and they loved it! We had a lot of fun and we didn't have to worry about any snow. Paul Luis found 4 silver rings: nice job, Paul. Nancy Auffet found a silver earring; Paula Palmquist found a 1956 Wheatie; Gordon Hale found a 1957 Wheatie; Linda Carlson found a cool Elks lodge medallion and a 1943 steel Wheatie (wow, you don't see those found very often); Justin Lee found an ATM on the side of the hill and also the most cash ($11.77). a 1951 and a 1946 Wheatie. Good going, Justin. We didn't find any gold jewelry that was marked. There were 5 Wheaties and 10 foreign coins found. The attendance winner was Ron Spada who won a nice Kennedy half dollar. We found 16 lbs of trash and $55.76 in cash.

August

We went to Brentwood Park and Lane School on Saturday August 27th. It was a beautiful, sunny, summer day and the ground was hard in some places and soft in others as they water most of the park. There were 18 members that counted out and one guest. Clarence Sparks found a nice 10k gold chain necklace; Michael Pfau found a beautiful 14k mother’s ring with four birthstones in it. Linda Carlson found a nice silver bracelet, and Arnie Mauroni found a silver ring with a tiger eye stone in it. Bill Baker found the oldest coin: a 1940 nickel; Scott Hadley found two wheaties; Dick Gaboury, Brian Stafford, and Paul Luis found one wheatie each. Scott Hadley was the attendance drawing winner and won a nice walking liberty half dollar. Arnie Mauroni found 5 club tokens; Michael Pfau, Mike Jefferies, and Brian Stafford each found 1 club token. So that means Arnie will be hiding 19 tokens for our next hunt; you don’t want to miss that hunt. Here is the good news: I won’t be eligible to find any of the club tokens on the next hunt; so if you don’t find any tokens, don’t blame me. We found $45.08 in cash and 12 pounds of trash.

The top six hunters are:

1. Arnie Mauroni 149 points
2. Paul Luis 89
3. Mike Jeffries 81
4. Linda Carlson 74
5. Dick Gaboury 66
6. Clarence Sparks 62
